New Year’s Eve. It’s the busiest night
of the year on the Thames for passenger vessels as people get
afloat to welcome in the New Year
with some of the best views of the fireworks. Our launches are on duty closing the river to traffic in central London ahead of the fireworks and throughout the display. At our Thames Barrier Navigation Centre, the duty officers keep a close eye on vessel movements throughout central London.
If you can't be there, but want to catch some of the sights, follow us on Twitter (@LondonPortAuth): we’ll live tweet some shots from the launches during the night.
The Thames has been invaded.
The Quagga mussel has spread rapidly through Europe and has just been found, for the first time, on the tidal Thames. A prolific breeder and water filter, it could significantly impact the river’s ecology Shell fish populations may be specifically affected. We are concerned as they have the potential to smother native species, block pipes, alter eco systems and foul boat hulls and adhere to river structures.
