The Queen’s Baton Relay took to the Thames on Saturday, 7 June on its way to Scotland for the Commonwealth Games.

It was held aloft on board the Queen’s Row Barge, Gloriana, which was rowed by a crew from the Ahoy Centre, a charity in Deptford that introduces children to rowing and sailing.

Straight off the row barge, the Baton, which carries a sealed, secret message written by the Queen, visited the Millennium Bridge, where Olympic gymnast silver medalist Louis Smith MBE performed on a high bar over the Thames.

From there, the torch was carried to
The Tower of London.

The Baton Relay is the main curtain
raiser for the Commonwealth Games due
to be held in Glasgow between 23 July
and 3 August.

PLA CEO, Robin Mortimer, has joined the Centre for London Commission looking at East Thames crossings. Looking west from Tower Bridge there are 16 road bridges along the next 20 miles of the Thames, up to Kew.
To the east of Tower Bridge, however, there is only one road crossing within London. The existing tunnels and bridges are badly congested and have been identified by the Centre for London and, separately, the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as a systemic vulnerability to the London transport network. The commission, chaired by former Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis, brings together experts from the worlds of transport, engineering, politics,

regeneration, housing and architecture,
to produce a proposal for new crossing construction. Submissions
of original evidence or analysis relating to
the delivery of new Thames crossings
are invited by the Commission to [email protected] including the words ‘Commission on East Thames Crossings’ in the subject line. The Commission is open to evidence submissions until mid-July.
