“Totally Thames” is a new month-long celebration of the Thames aimed at putting the focus on the 42-mile stretch of the river through London.
This new extended event follows on from the success of the well-established weekend celebration, Thames Festival. Its popularity drove the desire to create a month-long celebration involving a host of river-inspired events.
“Totally Thames is set to be a great celebration of the river,” said PLA CEO, Robin Mortimer. “We are looking forward to doing our bit and sharing the excitement of the Thames and what happens on it with the rest of London.”
The Totally Thames festival will include arts, music and community festivals, regattas, river rallies and races, foreshore archaeology, exploration, environmental and educational activities. Events to look forward to include:
Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Festival (5-9 Sept): The Royal Borough of Greenwich will host the largest fleet of Tall Ships to visit London in 25 years (read more on Tall Ships Extravaganza).
Handel’s Fireworks Music and Illuminations (14 Sept): Performed in
the Privy Garden at Hampton Court Palace by a 30-piece orchestra and followed by a Georgian fireworks display.
|
The Great River Race (27 Sept): Also known as London's River Marathon, this boat race up the Thames attracts more than 300 crews from across the globe.
The full programme of events will be announced in this month (July).
