A procession of historic vessels – led by our harbour service launch Barnes – helped mark Queen Elizabeth II becoming Britain’s longest-reigning monarch. As the 89-year-old sovereign celebrated 63 years and 216 days on the throne in September, boats including royal row barge Gloriana and former PLA survey vessel Havengore took to the river. The celebrations started at Tower Bridge with a number of vessels, leisure cruisers and passenger boats sounding their horns for one minute before passing under the iconic bridge and making their way towards the Houses of Parliament. The event follows a similar procession earlier this year marking the 50th anniversary of Winston Churchill's funeral. Acting PLA marine river inspector Peter Semple said: “It was an honour to lead the procession and it went without a hitch. Deckhand Kevin Ridley and myself were pleased as punch to be involved.”
Speaking in the Scottish Borders on the big day, her majesty said the title of She added: "Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones – my own is no exception – but I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness.” |
