Three new barges have been deployed by waste specialists Cory Riverside – taking more than 25,000 annual lorry trips off London roads. The barges, which came into service a few months ago, will be used to ship 200,000 tonnes of incinerator ash from Cory’s waste facility in Bexley.

Sealed containers of ash will be loaded onto the barges, where they will be taken to a processing plant at the Port of Tilbury, operated by Ballast Phoenix, and turned into construction aggregate.
Cory’s general manager Neil Caborn said: “Compared to the

existing fleet of waste barges, these new ones have been specifically designed for our Thames operation to carry heavier payloads of ash.”
Cory Riverside now boasts a fleet of five tugs, five new ash barges and 47 waste barges.

Young sea cadets Kason Dray and Tyler Randall spent a day getting some valuable experience on our busy pilot cutter Patrol. The dedicated ship, based at Gravesend, takes pilots onto craft entering or leaving the port. Kason and Dray are part of Gravesend Sea Cadets where Ross Coleman,

a PLA deckhand, holds the rank of petty officer.

Both cadets performed a range of tasks and duties on the cutter, and many more eligible cadets will get to experience time aboard Patrol over the coming months.

A greater variety of boats can
now call at Bankside Pier after
an eagerly awaited extension
was finished.

London River Service bosses, who manage public transport services
on the river, say increasing the
size of the pontoon also makes
it easier for vessels to berth – improving safety on the river.
A further pier extension at Westminster was finished in July.

The work at Westminster will add space, allowing fast and frequent
River Bus services to call. They
will soon provide a new direct link
from Woolwich and North Greenwich to Westminster.

Bin it, for a Cleaner Thames
